Subject: Looking for Gruppo and their latest exposure

Great site on Gruppo Sportivo.
I searched for them as I heard one of their songs being played in the
background of Good Will Hunting in the scene where the math professor is
inquiring about Will at the custodial office (bizarre!). Guess Van Zant
likes Gruppo as well.

I didn't see any strategies for acquiring any of their music. I worked
in a record store when Mistakes came out, and my copy of it is long
since gone.

Any suggestions for tracking down some of their music (especially
mistakes?)

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You and Daniel Silverman have been very helpful in directing me to Gruppo
music.

I live in Mexico city, where I happened to run across Copy Copy back in
1980. I have a Mexican Ariola version of that album. It is funny to
think of the Mexican Radio, since it became a true fact.

I never ran across another record in this country untill I started lookin
in the net.

Thanks for your kind letter.

You have made my day! I have been wondering how to rplace my lost Gruppo
albums for years. I first heard them in the late 70's in New Orleans La.
US. I lost all my vinyl stuff over the years and I always mourned the loss
of my Gruppo albums. It doesn't help that living now in the land locked
and hermetic city of Indianapolis no one has ever heard of them! Like you,
I love'em. Hopefully I can now find at least some of the stuff somewhere.
I'm off to relish the rest of this page and I thank you from the bottom of
my heart for getting me in touch with my mis-spent youth once again.
Keep up the page. I'll be around

Thanks for the great Gruppo Sportivo site. I have all their releases to
date with the exception of the Vanderfruits solo Cd. Does Van records
have an email addy where I can write for ordering info?
Also, gruppo released a 12" single of rythmisaconstantbeat. I also have
the Meike Touw `tooty frooty' album. It's buried in my collection right
now ( I moved recently, and things got out of order). When I locate it,
I'll send more info if you need it.
Also, Gruppo released a Cd single for "Sucker..." It has `Blue Moon',
`Tea Shirt' and `A horse with no name' on it... I suppose the earlier
records have never been released on CD right?
Just listened to `Second Life'...Sounds like shit, eh??
Write if you wish.....

I'm not sure this is going to get to anyone but I had to note that Gruppo
Sportivo's album "mistakes" is the best album that I've heard in my 41
years and is likely to be the best album I'll hear in my life. It defined
my college years in the late 1970's and it signalled an end to the dreary
or dull music that preceded it for a few decades. It is a key benchmark
for a lifetime. Wish I had a CD of it but it remains one of the sole
reasons why I keep my turntable hooked up. It was brilliant and I'm
amazed that so many missed it. glad you didn't.

Gruppo Sportivo CDs called 'Sing Sing' and 'Young and Out'?? These are
the only titles that our best import shop can get, and I've never heard
of either of them. Is Hans Vandenberg on them?? Any of their other CDs
available anywhere else that you know if?? Sorry for all the
questions, but you're the only one I know that would know about these

It's great to see someone out there who's devoted to Gruppo. I've got
virtually everything they've ever done, including a few things not in your
discography. soem Bsidesw ("Rare Tracks" EP, "My Favourite Song", "I
don't Know," also, An undated cd came out either late 80s or early 90s
called "Sucker of the Century" with Hams, Peter, with Max engineering. I
found it in Wave in Tokyo. Only the first track, "The Opposite" Is
really reminiscent of the old Gruppo. the other six numbers are rather
less than stellar, but still, it's a thrill to hear Hans again. Also, I
have Meike Touw's Tooty Fruity, which she actually home-taped for me, at
my request (I've never actually seen the LP). It's a great record, very
Gruppo-esque.

I have to tell you that I disagree with your appraisal of Gruppo's later
work Pop! Goes the Brain, and especially Design Moderne are truly
fantastic, mixing all kinds of pop references with Hans' early Woody Allen
persona.

Please write back, and let's compare notes. I've never had contact with a
Gruppo nut, except those that I've persoanlly created!

As promised, here're some capsules of some things you missed (off the top of
my head, so they're not great literature).

Rare Tracks EP

Gruppo's first two Barry Hay-produced singles from 75 and 76, combined on a
12" EP; five songs providing a taste of things to come. "Hoola Fever",
their second A-side, is perhaps the standout here, but all five are superb,
including their only sad (non-love) song ever, "Nickles and Dimes".

Sucker of the Century

Sort of a Gruppo postscript, this late-80s seven song CD EP is their weakest
release. Only the opening track, "The Opposite", and to a far lesser
extent, the title track, capture the humor and playfulness of prime Gruppo.
Forays into hard rock and tunelessness are simply baffling.

Dear Sinatra,

Who expects a Gruppo Sportivo homepage to reside in California? Not me. My
compliments,
both for the design of your page and for taking up the Gruppo Ambassador
function.
I missed info on the 'Rare tracks: For collectors only' EP. It is a Polydor
release, number 2454 120 and stems from 1976 (side 1) and 1977 (side 2) (the
labels from each side of the vinyl record have different years printed on
them). On side 1, there are the tracks produced by Golden Earring's Barry
Hay and John Kriek:
- Out There In The Jungle (VanDeFruits) 3'01''
- Nobody Can Win Forever (Everybody May Lose) (VanDeFruits) 4'31''
- I Can't Stop Lovin' You (VanDeFruits) 3'07''
On side 2 are two tracks produced by the Nits' Robert-Jan Stips:
- Hoola Fever (VanDeFruits) 2'44''
- Nickles and Dimes (VanDeFruits) 2'50'
And, to be short, the album is most certainly worth possessing for any
Gruppo fan. And
for others. Not only as a 'collectors item', but because the music is really
good.
I bought it back in the early eighties for the modest amount of $5. Haven't
seen it since then.

Hope this helps to complete your Gruppo page. Best of wishes,

I scounged up your web site on the new Digital search engine
(couldn't find you on Yahoo, et al.). Glad to see some sort of
tribute for these guys, even if it is accompanied by the "hip"
analysis in the discography. But, yeah, "Copy Copy" is
indescribable. "Be glad it's on MY radio. And not on yours."

We saw Gruppo perform live in Berlin at the Kant Kino while they were
on the "Pop! Goes the Brain" tour. It was *anything* but formulaic.
But, to each his own... Just LOVE that Telecaster sound on
"Rhythmisaconstantbeat"! And where else can you hear a imitation of
Freddy Mercury say, "I'm pleashed to meet you, Hansh!"

Would you possibly have any info on how to get hold of a copy of
"Design Moderne"? It's the only one we're missing. I fantasize that
each album has been lovingly remastered and captured on CD, available
only in the Netherlands, natch.

I wish I could tell you what Hans Vandenburg is up to nowadays. We
thought we saw him briefly in a Golden Earring video. Ho-hum...
Maybe he's working behind the scenes now.

If you're into the unusual and hard-to-find, how about "The Teardrop
Explodes," "Martha and the Muffins," and "Ultravox"? Of course,
there's no excuse for Ultravox being hard to find. Geez, they
influenced everybody. And why is Gary Numan so difficult to track
down? Something's wrong with this world...

Anyway, thanks for the page. BTW, I've got a scanner, and I suppose
I could do up some of the old covers, if you'd like to put 'em on
your page.

It's an astounding bit of work. I hate to give DEC any credit -- I mean
they had to be dragged kicking and screaming over into the UNIX, TCP/IP,
UTP World -- but I digress. Alta Vista is vast, fast, and accurate.
Five out of five stars.

It's hard to describe. Hans had that goofy grin on his face a lot of the
time. He had bad posture and seemed occupied with his lovely Telecaster.
The Berliners seemed to love him. "Meanwhile... In Berlin... I still
had some lipstick on my chin."

I remember the sax player had a tight spotlight on him as he stood
sideways (so's ya could see his silhouette) while playing the
unforgettable lick from "Who's in Trouble?" You know: "Daa-dut-da-dut-DAAA-
da-duh-da-duh-da-duh."

Hey! Let's get some down loadable .WAV files out there for people.
"What doesn't play the things I like -- in 1979? Always talking when I
put it on. Talking all the time!"

You know something, though... I think seeing Split Enz during the
"Waiata" tour was the one concert my wife and I will never forget. It
was before they sold out to the American money machine ("Time and Tide"?
Ho-hum.), so they still had the big hair, the make-up and the matching
suits. It was absolutely terrific. We think they would have done "Iris"
as an encore, but some drunken Brit pushed on a microphone base and nearly
knocked Tim Finn's teeth out. Eddy Raynor dumped his drink on the "bloke"
and fisticuffs almost broke out. Anyhow, they left the stage in a huff.

I wish I could get all the old M+M albums on CD. "This Is the Ice Age" is
one of those albums that's etched into my psyche. Critics were way too
hard on them in the US and UK. Some Brit rag ("Melody Maker"?) panned the
work as trite, out of their league, etc. They even picked on the guitar
work in "Boy Without Filters." Imagine that! It's a masterpiece!

We're sorely lacking in the "Ultravox" dept. The only copy of "Vienna" I
have is an old pre-Dolby cassette, which I'm bound to wear out.
